Rude Awakening

There I was.

At the beach. On vacation. I'd just finished a week... it was great. I was about to start week two.

I saw my friends. So wonderful to have you here! We've so much fun in store! I can't wait to lounge, chat, relax, sleep, romp, and enjoy.

Wait.

Something is wrong.

What's that sound? What is it? Oh no.....

"Mommmmmmmmmmmmmyyyy! Come!"

It was a dream. Just a dream. I didn't even get my second week of vacation in the dream. And then Ilana woke me up. And she had a very dirty diaper.

This is NOT the vacation I was expecting.

Missing a book? I may know where it is...

At 2 1/2 years old, our daughter Ilana is already a major bookhound. While I love books, I'm not a great reader. I have a hard time sitting still long enough to really get involved. My husband Ori, on the other hand, LOVES to read and relishes his time with books. He will read, watch tv, and listen to music all at once. (Yeah. I know.) My parents and sisters are all avid readers. So I guess I'm not surprised by Ilana's love of the written (and illustrated) world.

Out of curiousity, I just walked through the house and counted her books... at least the ones I could easily find. There are over 140 of them. They include simple picture books, dog breed books, pop-up books, books she's swiped from my own prized children's book collection, fiction, non-fiction, and books that I have purchased to write about with my 4th grade penpal with In 2 Books.

She swipes magazines to read. She swipes our mail to read. She grabs the newspaper. She doesn't want to miss out.

This child will read anywhere.

She likes to read on our bed. She likes to read on her bean bag chair. She likes to read on the couch. In our laps. In the bathroom while we're taking a shower. On the toilet. In the car. Before bed. When she wakes up. During meals. She'll be running around playing, spy a book she likes, and stop to read it. She snuggles up on our dog's bed to read there. Sometimes she even reads to the dog!

She happily declares "Storytime!" whenever she gets a chance. But the best part is listening to her read us bedtime stories. You haven't lived until you've heard a 2 year old read you "That Pesky Toaster" by Ben Hillman.

Maybe it's time to pull out her "Baby's First Sylvia Plath". Do you think she's ready??? Or should we start with the "Baby's First Kurt Vonnegut?"

Decisions... decisions....

I'm just happy to have a reader.
